Asphalt Mill & Replace
The mill and replace method is similar to the full depth remove and replace method. However, not all the existing asphalt has to be removed, which stretches your Rand.
Milling asphalt is done by a machine that planes the pavement to a depth appropriate for the repair. The section is generally ground down to a depth of up to 100mm. After milling is complete, the old material is then removed and disposed of. A tack coat is applied to the surface for adhesion between the layers of asphalt. New asphalt is then installed to bring the failed area back up to the existing grade level. The new asphalt is then rolled to ensure compaction.
Asphalt Surfacing
Step 1: Demolition and Removal
The first step in the asphalt installation process is to remove the existing surface, whether it is asphalt, concrete or pavers.
-
Demolition and removal is completed using heavy machinery, including small bobcats and TLBs.
-
Debris is removed and transported off site.
-
Step 2: Drainage

-
Proper water drainage is vital to your asphalt, because water is a major cause of damage, including potholes, cracks and heaving.
-

Step 3: Prepare the Sub Base
The most important part of your new asphalt surface is actually the sub-base.
-
The sub-base provides a stable surface to support new pavement.
-
During the installation, base thickness, base stability, and compaction are important steps. If the sub-base is not appropriately compacted, the asphalt surface on top will not provide years of durability.

Step 4: Binder and Surface Course
Once the sub base is laid and any soft areas are identified and repaired, it is time to add the binder.
-
The binder layer otherwise known as Priming consists of spraying a primer onto the compacted gravel or crushed rock base. This is carried out to prepare the surface for the subsequent seal coat and to assist in waterproofing the pavement.
-

Step 6: Install New Asphalt Surface
Once the supportive structures of a new asphalt surface are installed, the top layer of fresh asphalt is added to provide a clean, smooth ride.
-
Surface asphalt is made up of small aggregate, sand and emulsion.
-
This combination of materials creates asphalt that when installed appropriately, provides a smooth and shiny finished surface.
-

Step 7: Butt Joints and Transitions
It is very rare to install an asphalt surface that does not connect to existing driveways, roadways or parking lots. As such, we must ensure a smooth the transition from old surface to new.
-
Butt joints are areas were old asphalt or concrete meets new asphalt pavement.
-
These transitional areas require special attention to ensure that the grading and water run-off is appropriate.

To Complete the Project: Final Roll
Once the asphalt and butt joints have been laid, the entire surface is smoothed and compacted.
-
Using a steel roller, the new asphalt pavement surface is compacted and smoothed.
-
This process step ensures that no small bumps of aggregate or stone are left exposed..
Sealcoating
A slurry seal is the application of a mixture of water, asphalt emulsion, aggregate (very small crushed and additives to an existing asphalt pavement surface. A slurry seal is similar to a fog spray except the slurry seal has aggregates as part of the mixture. Chip Seals are the most versatile and widely used pavement preservation process. These cost effective processes allow for large areas to be treated in an era of shrinking budgets.
Double Chip Seals are suited for roads which exhibit moderate to severe cracking, open textured roads where surface
fines have been lost and on freshly leveled or scratched roads where the surface is too open and porous for a Single Chip Seal to be successful.
Double Chip Seal is a two layer Chip Seal where one is applied immediately after the other. The second application can utilize either ¼ inch or #8 aggregate, depending on the desired finished surface.

BENEFITS OF DOUBLE SEAL
-
Doubles the protection from oxidation and deterioration from moisture
-
Can be successfully used on moderate to severely deteriorated and cracked roads
-
Extremely durable and flexible surface which reduces and significantly delays cracking
-
Improves skid resistance and winter traction due to the textured surface
-
Reduces snowplow damage
Segmented Paving, Kerbing & Channeling
Segmented concrete paving is a system of individual, shaped blocks, arranged to form a continuous, hard-wearing surface overlay. Kerb & Channel is a concrete or stone structure typically located at the edge of a road designed to provide road drainage and as a barrier to prevent vehicles from leaving the roadway.
Earthworks
The Process of earthworks is to excavate the existing land to a suitable level so that road construction may begin. The earthworks can take the form of either excavation in the form of cuts or the construction of embankments to carry an elevated highway.
